Ropotamo River

The boat excursion start and finish at the Ropotamo River

The Ropotamo River Natural Reserve was created in 1940 to protect both the marshland as well as the fauna and flora, some of which is indigenous to the area.

You can go on river tours to enjoy the nature. Just South of the bridge that crosses the Ropotamo River on the road from Sozopol to Primorsko there is an exit on the East side of the road, which leads to a parking area and the river tour boats.

You see some birdlife on the tour, but that is usually it. The animals on land are too shy to get near the water when you pass.

The Lion Head cliff East of the Ropotamo River

After about 10 minutes sailing, look to the right, or East. On the South end of a cliff you see the famous Lion Head protruding from the cliff. It is looking to the right, or South. Do you see it on the picture? If not, there is a clearer picture of it at the bottom of the page.

The Ropotamo River mouth into the Black Sea

The tour takes you to the mouth of the Ropotamo River, where it exits out into the Black Sea. From there you turn and go back the same way.

As this is a nature reserve, hunting and fishing is illegal, and the birds and animals can live i peace from humans, which is one reason why you can spot birds perching in trees at the waters edge.

The Lion Head seen fro mthe main road between Primorsko and Sozopol

This is a closeup of the Lion Head, taken from the Main Road. Notice the dark lying halfmoon shadow with a round "eyelid" above that make up the eye? The horisontal crack in the cliff close to the bottom right that is the lion's mouth?
