When Bulgaria finally defeated the Turks on the Shipka Pass in 1878, Russian soldiers fought and died in the battle. To honour and commemorate them, Russia has built a Russian church just south of the Shipka Pass in the foothills.
The Shipka Russian Church is one of the most beautiful churches in Bulgaria today. This is the church seen from West and the main entrance.
